Release Notes for Dr.Web Anti-virus for Windows servers 7.0

Last updated on 01.06.2012

Dr.Web Anti-virus for Windows servers provides multi-level protection of RAM, hard disks, and removable devices against various security threats such as viruses, rootkits, Trojans, spyware, adware, hack tools, and other malicious programs. The anti-virus engine and virus databases are common for all components and different operating environments. Dr.Web Anti-virus for Windows servers uses a convenient and efficient procedure for updating virus databases and program components via the Internet.

Dr.Web Anti-virus for Windows servers includes the following components:

Dr.Web Scanner is an anti-virus scanner with a graphical interface that launches at request or as scheduled, and scans your computer for viruses and other malicious software. There is also a command line interface version of scanner (Dr.Web Console Scanner).
SpIDer Guard® is an on-access anti-virus scanner that constantly resides in memory while scanning files and RAM "on the fly" and instantly detecting any malicious activity.
Dr.Web Updater allows registered users to receive and automatically install updates to Dr.Web virus databases and other program modules.
SpIDer Agent is a component that helps you configure and manage your anti-virus product.

New Features in This Release

New GUI scanner. The new scanning subsystem is able to perform multi-thread scanning of hard drives which allows to take advantage of multiple-core processors. Due to improvements in product architecture, Dr.Web Scanner is guaranteed to quickly check autorun objects, removable data-storage devices, network and logical drives, e-mails, and files and directories including archived files while at the same time preserving the highest rate of detection. Starting from version 7.0, Dr.Web Scanner is also checking system BIOS for possible infection with malicious code (so called bioskit).
New Anti-rootkit. The new Dr.Web Anti-rootkit Service is a universal subsystem for neutralizing active and complex threats that use root-kit technologies to hide their presence in the infected system. The new service uses a specially designed Dr.Web Anti-rootkit API and improved routines to detect active infections.
Anti-virus network. This new component provides remote control over Dr.Web Anti-virus for Windows servers 7.0 installed over the local area network even without Dr.Web Control Center. Users can enter a protection password on  one computer and control the anti-virus software on another PC in the same network by performing the following range of tasks: retrieve anti-virus statistics and log files, check the Dr.Web virus databases version, enable or disable anti-virus modules, view or change their settings, and replace a key file or serial number.
Master password to manage anti-virus. The new option of defining a single master password allows to protect all anti-virus settings. Whenever a user attempts to access general Dr.Web settings, individual component settings, or tries to disable a component or self-protection, they will be prompted to enter the password. If the master password is not defined, then the anti-virus is managed in the same was as Dr.Web Anti-virus for Windows servers version 6.0.
Preserving settings on upgrade. Starting from version 7.0, Dr.Web Anti-virus for Windows servers supports transfer of anti-virus settings from version 6.0 into version 7.0 installation. Preserved is a part of settings for the following components: SpIDer Agent, SpIDer Guard.
Raising access privileges at scanning. The new version of Dr.Web Anti-virus for Windows servers supports raising of scanning process access privileges up to administrative when scanning is started under unprivileged account. This option is available on Microsoft® Windows Server® 2008 or later operating systems and can be enables in Dr.Web Scanner settings or using Dr.Web Console Scanner command line switches.

Resolved Issues and Enhancements

The following issues were addressed in this release:

Modified architecture. In order to improve performance, architecture of Dr.Web Anti-virus for Windows servers version 7.0 is significantly modified: new services are introduced and the performance of all components is optimized. In particular, the new Dr.Web Control Service is responsible for controlling all anti-virus components and their interaction as well as for retrieving statistics and scheduling updates. The Anti-virus network relies on this service.
Performance and scan speed. The new scanning subsystem is able to perform multi-thread scanning where tasks are distributed between the CPU cores. As a consequence, the scan speed of Dr.Web Scanner and overall performance of the anti-virus has grown substantially.
Local repository and improvements to Dr.Web self-protection. To improve the reliability of Dr.Web self-protection, a new feature is introduced in version 7.0 that enables the anti-virus to automatically restore its components from a local repository. This repository stores the reference version of all components used to quickly restore them if component files have been damaged or deleted.
Product stability. Product operation is significantly more stable in this release which reduces the possibility of BSOD ("blue screen of death") appearance during scanning.
Enhancements to custom scans. The new version of Dr.Web Scanner allows to select particular system objects to scan such as RAM, boot sectors, autorun objects, etc.
Centralized Dr.Web Quarantine. All component that check various objects for threats use the same Dr.Web Quarantine to isolate suspicious and malicious files. The Quarantine is accessible from the SpIDer Agent menu. The infected.!!! folders are no longer used.
Saving settings in registry. All settings from the drweb32.ini file has been moved to the Windows registry in this release. The drweb32.ini file is no longer used.
Improvements to License Manager. Starting from version 7.0, the new license key registration no longer requires reboot. All anti-virus components start using the new key files at once when the file is selected in the License Manager. The registration procedure interface has been also improved.
Improvements to Dr.Web Updater. In version 7.0, the Dr.Web Updater interface has been improved. The scheduled update is now controlled by Dr.Web Control Service and does not depend on Windows Scheduler. The new version does not support the use of system settings any longer when configuring network access via prosy server.
Improved localization. The graphical user interface of Dr.Web Anti-virus for Windows servers version 7.0 is also available in the following new languages: Azerbaijani, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese. The change in the UI language appears at once when the corresponding setting is modified.
